Pecan Handling and Storage

Handling and Storage

Proper storage of pecans preserves the quality and maintains the natural flavor and aroma of the nuts. Pecans should be stored in airtight containers, such as sealed plastic bags, at low temperatures to extend storage life.

Storage at room temperature is not recommended because the pecan’s high healthy oil content will begin to degrade fairly soon.

Best Storage

Freeze in sealed plastic bags to avoid the pecans’ absorbing odors from other foods. Properly packaged and stored at freezing temperatures (0 degrees Celsius; 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below), both shelled and in-shelled pecans will both maintain their freshness for two years or more.  Frozen in-shell pecans will remain edible for two additional years.

Good Storage

Refrigerate in sealed plastic bags to avoid absorbing odors from other foods. Refrigerated at a temperature of 4 degrees C; 40 degrees F, properly packaged shelled pecans will stay fresh for approximately six months. In-shell pecans will be fresh for 9-12 months.

Pecans can be thawed and re-frozen without loss of quality
